The study aimed to explore doctoral supervision from the perspective of PhD candidates. It focused on supervisory practices, the relationship between PhD candidates and supervisors, as well as perceived strengths, challenges and needs throughout the doctoral process. The objective was to gain a better understanding of PhD candidates’ experiences in order to provide an overview of current doctoral supervision practices.
Doctoral supervision plays a central role in the PhD journey, yet practices and expectations can vary widely across contexts. This study sought to understand how PhD candidates experience superivsion in their everyday work: what works well, what can be challenging and what types of support they consider important. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the doctoral experience and may help improve supervisory practices.
This study was conducted as an online survey targeting PhD candidates currently enrolled in a doctoral programme, across all disciplines. Data were collected during the designated data collection period. Participation was voluntary and anonymous.
