Doctoral supervision survey

A study conducted by Matthieu Lafon, PhD, and Jeanne Boisselier, PhD

This study focuses on the dynamics and challenges of doctoral supervision, based on the perspectives of PhD candidates and supervisors. The study is open to anyone currently enrolled in a PhD programme or currently supervising one or more PhD candidates (regardless of funding status, discipline or sector). Participation consists of completing an online questionnaire, available in French or English, which takes approximately 10-15 minutes. The questionnaire is available until December, 31, 2025.

This research project investigates doctoral supervision by examining supervisory practices, the supervisor–PhD candidate relationship, perceived challenges and strengths, as well as emerging needs. The project includes two complementary surveys: one targeting PhD candidates and the other targeting doctoral supervisors. By collecting a large number of responses, the study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current supervisory practices and experiences.

This research focuses on doctoral supervision, that is, the practices implemented by supervisors and the relationships they build with PhD candidates. We are interested in both the positive and the challenging aspects of supervision, as well as the needs that may arise for both supervisors and candidates. The findings will help us to draw up a broad picture of doctoral supervision today and to propose useful resources to support daily work. A summary of the results will be available upon request.
