Career Paths & Skills

We carefully study the job market for PhD holders, their professional trajectories, the factors determining those trajectories, and the professional experiences of PhD holders.

One of the most pressing questions for many PhDs is “What comes next?”. To even begin to answer that we know that detailed and relevant information is critical. To this end, we study quantitatively and qualitatively where PhDs go, what they do and what influences their paths. Our mission is to accurately map the lay of the land, steer them away from dragons and towards where they will feel most in their element.

Therefore, we carefully study the job market for PhD holders, their professional trajectories after graduation, the factors determining those trajectories, and the professional experiences of PhD holders (both the good and the bad). We are particularly motivated to understand non-academic career paths and the ways PhDs employ the skills they developed during their doctorate in entirely new contexts with a view to teasing out the subtle links between the academic and the private worlds. We hope to provide actionable insights in the areas where PhD holders are most needed today and how doctoral programs can better prepare them for their future careers.
